Ventilation Building Codes
406.6.3 Ventilation. A mechanical ventilation system shall be provided that is capable of exhausting a minimum of 1.5 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per square foot (0.71 L/s/m2) of floor area. Each engine repair stall shall be equipped with an exhaust pipe extension duct, extending to the outside of the building, which, if over 10 feet (3084 mm) in length, shall mechanically exhaust 300 cubic feet per minute (141.6 L/s). Connecting offices, waiting rooms, ticket booths and similar uses shall be supplied with conditioned air under positive pressure. Exception: In repair garages where there is no open flame and welding being performed within the building, the mechanical ventilation system required may be omitted when, in the opinion of the building official, the building is equipped with unobstructed openings to the outer air that are sufficient to provide the necessary ventilation.
